It was his daughter's wedding night and he couldn't sleep. His children's rooms were now empty. Moving through his house to the kitchen, he picked up a dead bottle of champagne (so it goes) from the reception and he drank it while unsticking in time and watching a war movie backwards and forwards. All of the wounded people and destroyed things became better. Then, he walked outside and was abducted by the Tralfamadorians. "Why me?" Billy asked. Comparing his situation to the random bugs trapped in amber, the alien said, "There is no why." Billy went back to the trains, where everyone was annoyed by Billy's violent and noisy sleep habits. On the eighth day in the train, the hobo died, and so did Weary, who told everyone on his car that Billy was responsible. The tenth day they arrived and got overcoats from a frozen pile. Only Billy ended up with a civilian one-a silly-looking, tiny, red velvet thing. Then, they were sent to be deloused. The best body of the bunch belonged to Indianapolis schoolteacher Edgar Derby. His son, a marine in the Pacific, would survive the war. Derby wouldn't. Car thief Paul Lazzaro, who had befriended Weary on the train, had the worst body. Billy bounded through time and ended up to Tralfamadore where an alien explained that only Earthlings believe in free will.
